Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune condition that affects the skin, causing the excessive and rapid growth of skin cells. It can lead to the formation of thick, scaly plaques. Autoimmune diseases affect the immune system, which produces T cells to protect the body against infectious agents. This overgrowth can lead to thick, scaly plaques that may itch or cause discomfort. In psoriasis, autoimmune activity leads to the excessive growth of skin cells. Typically, skin cells take about 21–28 days to replace themselves. However, in people with psoriasis, they take around 2–6 days or more days variates person to person.

Other health problems may develop as a result of psoriasis. While some people think of it as a skin disease however psoriasis can also affect the bones, the muscles and the metabolic system. People with psoriasis may experience social exclusion, image issues and low self-esteem. Together with the physical discomfort, itching, and pain of psoriasis, this can impact on their overall quality of life. People with psoriasis have a risk of depression that is twice as high as those who do not have the condition. Psoriasis might also lead to higher risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes.

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, Psoriasis is considered as the damage of two basic energies in the human body called Vata and Kapha. Vata is responsible for controlling body function and could contribute to the dryness and skin scaling of psoriasis. Kapha is responsible for growth and so Ayurvedic practitioners explain the itching and rapid skin cell turnover using this dosha. The imbalance between these two energies causes toxins to build up in a body, leading to inflammation. These toxins collect in profound tissues like rasa (supplement plasma), rakta (blood), masa (muscles), and lasika (lymphatic). These toxins cause contamination of more profound tissues, causing Psoriasis.

As a result, Ayurvedic treatments often revolve around not only herbal applications but also detox, diet and lifestyle advice. Purification of blood and tissues is the essential point of Ayurvedic treatment in instances of Psoriasis. Toxins are purified from the body and the digestion restored to promote healing. Nourishing herbs are then controlled to fortify and condition the tissues to advance the complete healing of the skin.

Triggers will be different in everyone with psoriasis, but main causes are:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Injuries to the skin
  • Infections
  • Hormonal changes
  • Wrong diet habits

Ayurveda offers a natural herbal remedy that comprises practicing a healthy diet, detoxification and meditation. The foremost priority of any Ayurvedic treatment is blood purification. It is said that detoxifying body works as the best Ayurvedic medicine for skin allergies. For Psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda, a therapy called Panchkarma (Detox)Therapy is used along with doing some necessary changes in your diet and preparing body for the process of detoxification.

Ayurveda emphasize a balance of “elements,” which they define as: A person’s universe -the body’s constitution “Prakriti”, the body’s life forces “dosha”, one way a person can keep these in balance is by reducing stress and anxiety. Meditation and the practice of “Pranayama,” a method of controlled breathing techniques, may benefit a person in reducing their psoriasis. These mindfulness techniques could benefit an individual’s overall well-being. As stress is a potential trigger for psoriasis flares, reducing stress levels through these relaxation techniques could help prevent a flare . As a result, Ayurvedic treatments often revolve around not only herbal applications, but also Pranayama, Diet and lifestyle advice.
