Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety and Stress is the biggest issue of today’s life and some of the potential causes of chronic stress and anxiety are high pressure jobs, financial difficulties, challenging relationships etc. What triggers a stress response in each person varies widely and today’s busy lifestyle is all too conducive to stress. Chronic stress and anxiety affect the whole body and triggers many ailments.

Mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and able to make a contribution to their community.”

As per Ayurveda, our mind and body are interconnected and hence there is strong interrelation between our nervous system and immunity. Studies show when there is a surge of stress,body release hormones which in turn suppress our immune system. This helps explains why people who suffer from chronic anxiety, depression and tension are found to have double the risk of certain diseases such as arthritis, severe headaches and heart disease.

If “like increases like and opposites balance”, then the antidote to stress is to offer our systems an abundance of the entire group of positivity and nourishing qualities through our diet, lifestyle, practices and relationships.


Emotional symptoms:

  • Becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody
  • Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control or need to take control
  • Having difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind
  • Feeling bad about yourself (low self-esteem), lonely, worthless and depressed
  • Avoiding others

Physical symptoms:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Upset Stomach, including diarrhea, Constipation and Nausea
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Chest Pain
  • Insomnia and rapid heartbeat
  • Frequent Cold  and infections
  • Loss of sexual desire or ability
  • Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and feet
  • Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing

Cognitive symptoms:

  • Constant worrying 
  • Rapid disorganised thoughts and forgetfulness
  • Inability to focus
  • Poor judgment and a perceived loss of control
  • Being pessimistic or seeing only the negative side

Ayurveda sights stress and anxiety as a disturbance of the nervous system, which is mainly regulated by Vata dosha. Vata dosha has qualities such as being cold, light, subtle and erratic and is easily disturbed by too much sensory stimulation and pressure. Vata rich people are naturally more susceptible to stress due to an increase in this dosha, which will show itself through fear, anxiety, panic, insomnia, feelings of isolation and a loss of appetite. Balancing vata and other factors will help in Anxiety and stress.
