Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety and Stress is the biggest issue of today’s life and some of the potential causes of chronic stress and anxiety are high pressure jobs, financial difficulties, challenging relationships etc. What triggers a stress response in each person varies widely and today’s busy lifestyle is all too conducive to stress. Chronic stress and anxiety affect the whole body and triggers many ailments.

Mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and able to make a contribution to their community.”

As per Ayurveda, our mind and body are interconnected and hence there is strong interrelation between our nervous system and immunity. Anxiety and stress are natural responses to challenging situations, but when they become overwhelming, they can disrupt daily life. Anxiety often manifests as excessive worry or fear about future events, while stress is the body’s reaction to a perceived threat, triggering a “fight or flight” response. Managing these emotions through relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and seeking support can help maintain emotional well-being.

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, stress and anxiety are viewed as disturbances of the mind and body’s balance, often resulting from an imbalance in the doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). Each dosha represents a combination of the five elements and governs specific physiological and psychological functions:

  1. Vata (Air and Space): Governs movement and creativity. Imbalance may lead to fear, anxiety, and restlessness.
  2. Pitta (Fire and Water): Controls metabolism and digestion. Imbalance may result in irritability, anger and aggression.
  3. Kapha (Earth and Water): Provides structure and stability. Imbalance may cause lethargy, depression and attachment.

Key Causes of Imbalance

  • Dietary Factors: Inappropriate food choices and irregular eating habits can aggravate doshic imbalances.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Irregular sleep patterns, lack of exercise and high-stress environments contribute to mental and physical imbalance.
  • Emotional Factors: Suppressed emotions, trauma and prolonged stress can lead to mental disturbances.
  • Genetic Predisposition: Having a family history of anxiety or other mental health disorders can increase the risk of developing anxiety.
  • Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions which are chronic , can be associated with anxiety symptoms.
  • Stressful Life Events: Traumatic experiences, major life changes, relationship issues, work-related stress, financial problems can trigger or exacerbate anxiety
