Haemorrhoids also called piles, are swollen veins in anus and lower rectum. Haemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal haemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external haemorrhoids). External haemorrhoids are the most common and most troublesome. Haemorrhoids cause pain, severe itching and difficulty sitting.

Symptoms of haemorrhoids include:

• Extreme itching around the anus
• Irritation and pain around the anus
• Itchy or painful lump or swelling near anus
• Faecal leakage
• Painful bowel movements
• Blood on toilet paper after having a bowel movement

What causes haemorrhoids?

Factors which cause include:

• Straining during a bowel movement
• Complications from chronic constipation  
• Sitting for a long period of time
• A family history of haemorrhoids

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda Haemorrhoids/piles known as Arsh. It is two type-

Vata-Pitta Arsh (Bleeding Piles)

Kapha-Vata Arsh(Non-Bleeding Piles)

Haemorrhoids swelling occur due to Kapha and Vata. It occurs due to aviation of apan vata and low digestive fire. Apana Vata a subspecies of Vata, responsible for the movement and separation of urine and stool. If Apana Vata gets out of balance, toxin  begins to accumulate in the body and lumps are formed in the colon. They may appear inside the anal tract and anus. Internal haemorrhoids may bleed sometimes, but usually do not cause pain. However, they can be increased by the pressure that causes the stool. If they are torn apart by this pressure, pain may also appear in addition to bleeding. External haemorrhoids are painful, and blood clots are often found in the stomach, especially in constipation.

Haemorrhoids caused by Vata – imbalance are rough, hard and dark. They are painful and often accompanied by constipation.

Haemorrhoids caused by Pitta imbalance are red, inflamed and bleeds.

Haemorrhoids caused by Kapha imbalance are large, whitish and soft with mucus. The disease also be caused by a simultaneous increase in the three Dosha, without the symptoms appearing all at once.
